“You Were a Ball of Growing Tissue” is an installation consisting of six hanging structures made out of wood, acrylic, birthday cake icing, metformin, glitter, resin, foam and wood. It depicts an embryo in its pod surrounded by fleshy insides, a-mist a constellation of wooden carved sculptures. The piece is a part of the artists larger body of experiments titled “Existential Bodies”. The experiment focuses on creating experiential pieces that portray visual experiences to trigger existential crises. These experiences can cause us to be aware of the past, present and future of our bodies.
Being an embryo is something we all originated from, but have no recollection of it. It can feel like a disconnect trying to relate or recall that past. Like we used to be just random balls of tissue in the world. How did we survive that? When did we become sentient? What can it do if we reflect on this past? How can that determine the present?
This piece was exhibited in the group show, “We are Still Here” at Westhive Basel, Switzerland and was curated by Afrinova Basel (13th June 2023 - 18th June 2023.
